Emily Sanders Receives Prestigious Award for Financial Literacy Work
~ Georgia Society of CPAs Names Sanders Distinguished Committee Chair ~
ATLANTA, June 24, 2008 – Emily Sanders, President and CEO of Sanders Financial Management, was today awarded the Distinguished Committee Chair Award from the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants (GSCPA), a professional organization for CPAs in Georgia. The recipient of the award is selected by the GSCPA president in recognition of outstanding leadership of a committee and contribution to the Society.
During the GSCPA Annual Convention held June 22-25, 2008 in Destin, Florida, Sanders was lauded for her work as chair of the Financial Literacy Committee whose mission is to raise Georgians’ awareness of responsible spending, saving for the future and money management.
“Emily Sanders has been an asset in defining the committees’ goals and effectively reaching those goals,” said Paula Mooney, President, GSCPA. “Her leadership has been instrumental in expanding the scope and reach of the committee and she’s established an outstanding foundation for future growth and success.”
An issue of mounting concern, financial illiteracy affects every income group. Recent studies show that 43 percent of American families spend more than they earn each year, and the average household credit card debt is more than $8,000. In 2005, 2 million Americans filed for bankruptcy – the highest amount in history and twice the number since 1995. The GSCPA Financial Literacy Committee is part of a larger national effort spearheaded by the AICPA designed to educate the American public, from school children to retirees, on financial topics that apply specifically to their particular stage of life.
Under Sanders’ leadership, the GSCPA Financial Literacy Committee continued their outreach to students through an ongoing partnership with Junior Achievement of Georgia. New initiatives launched by Sanders included assisting low-income individuals with tax preparation and filing assistance and working directly with women to help them achieve financial independence.
